Installation Green House Paddy Dryer in Rice Mill Unit Karawang

CRECPI ITB assessed eight RMUs in Karawang and Subang regencies in 2016, together with our local experts: Dr. Ardiyan Harimawan, ST., M.Eng.; Mayrina Firdayati, S.Si., M.T.; and Nurendra A. Kusuma, ST. The assessment results several improvement options that can be done by the industry to improve their productivity and consume less energy. In addition to that, the assessment also observed the drying process often becomes a major loss source. There are two types of drying in the assessed RMUs: conventional sundrying and mechanical bed drying using diesel oil. For the conventional sundrying-user, weather highly affects the drying time and occasionally damages several tones of paddy due that is soaked by heavy rain. For the mechanical bed drying-user the consumption of diesel oil is half of the operational cost of the overall milling which is more suitable to the big capacity RMU. However, most of the rice miller in Indonesia is categorized as micro to small industry that is not economically feasible to use diesel-fueled bed drying.

This case brings out idea to build a dryer that less dependent on the weather and does not consume fuel. Adopting Solar Bubble DryerTM developed for rice and greenhouse dryer for fruits, CRECPI ITB and team build a greenhouse paddy dryer. A prototype of the dryer that is designed by design product team from ITB (Dr. Andar Bagus Sriwarno, M.Sn. and Slamet Riyadi, S.Ds., M.Ds., has been mounted in one of the RMU in Karawang regency since April 20th 2017. One ton capacity of paddy dryer is built in 2 levels of rack. The structure is metal pipes while the cover is transparent plastic. Several trials have been done to evaluate the performance of this unit that brings to the next modification. From the preliminary trial, it was shown that the moisture reduction for about 5% could be done in 3 hours for the paddy on the upper rack, while the lower rack gives a lower performance. Some more trials will be done soon to confirm the performance.

The advantages in using this unit are:

  1. Paddy drying can be done anytime, less dependent to the weather
  2. Prevent paddy damage from the rain soaking
  3. Prevent the animal invasion which reduces rice yield
  4. Simpler operation compared to the conventional sundrying which needs packing in the evening even when drying is not finished

The trial is continued to achieve the optimum design, which finally can be replicated by the vendor and by other RMUs in the future.
